It’s back-to-school season! Are you looking for ways to keep your smaller kids occupied and engaged? Do you want to boost their literacy skills? Or offer them some out-of-house socialization? Or just learn some tips and tricks for helping those rapidly growing brains? BCPL has you covered!
We have many resources for the under-5-year-old crowd, and we’re here to share some of those with you!
1000 Books Before Kindergarten
Reading to your child, even as an infant, sets the stage for future success. It helps them learn how language works, both in written and printed forms; it helps them learn how books work; it promotes closeness between grown-ups and children; and it gets kids invested in reading from an early age!
Our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program is for kids ages 0-5 and it can be started anytime between those ages. The goal is to read 1000 books before your child starts kindergarten. Sound daunting? It’s not too hard! If you read one book every day for three years, you will have read 1,095 books. If you read three books every day, you will have read 1,095 books in just one year!
Re-reading books counts too!
And anyone in the family/your particular community can get involved. Did grandma read your child two books while watching them? That counts! Did your neighbor come over and read your kids a story? That counts!
Also, books in any language count! The goal is to increase literacy skills and those occur in any language. If English isn’t your first language, read in the language you communicate in with your child!

Storytimes
We offer storytimes during the week for children ages 0-3 and children ages 4-6. These are offered by our wonderful children’s librarian, and they’re chock full of songs, stories, and play! They’re a great chance for kids and grown-ups to socialize, and they offer kids valuable exposure to books and reading from the start!
Books
We have a diverse collection of books for children of all ages. These include board books, picture books, early readers, and more. And we have some wonderful children’s staff who can help you find what you’re looking for!
