Women's History Month is an annual observance to highlight the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. In the United States, Women's History Month traces its beginnings back to the first International Women's Day (observed on March 8) in 1911. The month-long celebration had its origins during the Reagan era in 1981 in week-long form when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28, which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as Women’s History Week. It remained Women's History Week until 1987, when March was designated by Congress as Women’s History Month. Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month.
